Take One Day at a Time: The Greatest Lesson Type 1 Diabetes Has Taught Me

We live in a world that constantly pushes us to keep running.

Running to keep up.

Running to achieve.

Running to prove we’re doing enough as mothers.

And for a long time, I lived that way too.

Before my son’s Type 1 diabetes diagnosis, our days felt like an endless schedule of activities. He was only 3 years old, and I filled our calendar with playdates, park visits, educational activities, and experiences designed to support his physical, emotional, and mental development.

I wanted to do everything right.

Like many moms, I was immersed in social media, unconsciously comparing our pace of life to other families. I felt the pressure to meet every milestone and provide everything a child is “supposed” to experience in order to grow and thrive.

Without realizing it, I had turned motherhood into a race.

Until the diagnosis came.

And everything stopped.

I remember those first days as if time itself had slowed down. Suddenly, the activities no longer mattered. The schedules, the meetings, the endless to-do lists… everything faded into the background.

There was no greater priority than helping my son navigate something so overwhelming and difficult for him.

It was a forced pause.

But it was also a revelation.

For the first time in a very long time, I allowed myself to simply be present.

To hold him without rushing.

To truly listen without thinking about the next task.

To sit beside him without mentally planning lunches, errands, or the rest of the day.

And that’s when I realized something that changed my life:

Motherhood is not only about accomplishing.

It’s also about enjoying.

Type 1 diabetes has brought enormous challenges, difficult days, and moments filled with fear. But it has also given us a deeply valuable lesson: take one day at a time.

Because when you live with something as unpredictable as Type 1 diabetes, you quickly learn that you cannot control everything. And worrying too much about tomorrow can steal the peace of today.

So we began living differently.

One day to learn.

One day to adapt.

One day to make mistakes and try again.

One day to celebrate small victories.

One day to rest.

One day to simply breathe.

Over time, I realized that life is not only made of big achievements, but also of small moments we often miss because we are too busy rushing through them.

Today, I still have responsibilities, schedules, and chaotic days. But I no longer want to live trapped in the belief that I always need to do more to be a good mother.

Now I want to live more intentionally.

More presently.

More connected to today.

And if your life also feels full of pressure, endless responsibilities, and constant demands… I want to invite you to pause.

Breathe.

Look at your children.

Look at yourself.

And remember that we are not in a competition.

Life also happens in the simple moments:

in a long hug, in a quiet conversation, in a slow afternoon with nowhere to rush.

Maybe we cannot control everything tomorrow will bring, but we can deeply embrace the gift that today is.

Take one day at a time.
